Outdoor School Team Leader Position Description
Position Description:
Team leaders put in long days working shoulder to shoulder with Outdoor School students. Team Leaders are both highly demanding as well as highly rewarding positions. Leaders spend most of their time in direct contact with students, working side-by-side while helping to coordinate a wide variety of resource management, conservation, and classroom projects. All Team Leaders are required to camp and participate in up to four, week long, labor-intensive spike projects with student crews. In addition, Team Leaders are also responsible for holding student conferences, contacting parents, and managing student data. Six Team Leaders are assigned to Outdoor School youth crews and are ultimately responsible for the crew's growth and development throughout the year. Leaders will spend their time inside and outside of the traditional classroom setting and are expected to create and implement lesson plans, evaluate students, and act as a role models and disciplinarians for the crew.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead youth in the safe and efficient manner.
- Completion of service projects.
- Act as a role model and leader among youth.
- Facilitate youth and team development, manage conflict resolution.
- Prepare required daily and monthly paperwork.
- Transport student teams in 12 passenger buses.
- Camp with youth crews on up to four, 8 day projects in a wilderness setting.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree Required (Minimum of two years experience in Classroom or Field education (licensed or Non-licensed), Outdoor Leadership and or Youth Development may be substituted for degree requirements).
- Valid driver's license and a history of responsible driving. Must be 21 years of age to qualify as a Northwest Youth Corps Driver.
- Experience teaching and/or leading youth, desire for personal challenge.
- Conservation, reforestation, and/or recreation skills.
- Desire to help youth develop leadership and job skills.
- Strong communication skills and a vested interest in community service.
- Ability to participate in intense physical labor/extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to deal with the unexpected (i.e. poison oak, bees, youth behavior).
Terms of employment: Six full time AmeriCorps members serve full time, 40-45 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, late August - mid June for a minimum of 1700 hours and a full 10 month term. Exact dates are tentative and subject to a slight change.
Program Benefits: $11,100 living allowance dispersed evenly on a monthly basis, health insurance, 15 days of break and a are eligible for a $4,725 education award upon completion of the 1700 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing housing, food, work clothes, and a pair of 8 inch tall leather work boots. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check.
