Wet paint, new skills!

Campus buildings get a fresh coat of paint

Youth learn some fresh work skills

NYC's 2005 Youth Paint Project provides a fresh coat of paint for NYC buildings and a fresh opportunity for youth.  A crew of one supervisor and three youth are busy cleaning, sanding, brushing, rolling, and spraying.

Youth Paint Project crew members will gain valuable work and painting skills while learning a great deal about paint, the painting profession, and work readiness skills. When the project ends, they will leave with confidence, skills, and knowledge that will enable them to gain further employment in the painting industry.

Crew members will work as part of a four-person team. They will be responsible for performing preparatory and clean-up duties, applying paint, following OSHA and general safety rules, and various other tasks assigned by the Youth Paint supervisor.

The Youth Paint Project begins June 20th and is scheduled to end on August 19th, 2005. Youth Paint may end a week earlier due to early completion of the project.

Crew members will be paid $7.25 per hour. Work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Every other Friday, there will be a field trip that all crew members are expected to attend.  The first field trips were to Forrest Paint, Miller Paint, and paint job sites.

Work activities

Follow instructions from supervisors.
Apply a primer or sealer to new surfaces.
Strip, sand, brush, burn, or blast old surfaces so new paint will apply properly.
Wash walls and trim, fill nail holes, and sand rough spots.
Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect during painting. May remove lamps and door knobs.
Paint surfaces using brushes, rollers, or paint sprayers.
Erect scaffolding or set up ladders.

Project support

The youth painters are all Lane County Workforce Investment Act  (WIA) youth. This opportunity is made possible by the Workforce Investment Act programs at NYC and Springfield High School, and Lane Workforce Partnership.
